FRANKENSTEIN #1-18 (1973-1974)


Marvel’s Frankenstein.

Created in 1973 by Gary Friedrich (creator of Ghost Rider), the first issue of his first comic was called “The Frankenstein Monster.”

The first four issues simply retold the movie story, but then it began to get original.

Admittedly, the next three issues drifted. But in #8, pictured above, he met Dracula.

Dracula had already been in his own comic–the great Tomb of Dracula–and yet he is killed here by Frankenstein.

This book is canon, but that death is NOT.

Perhaps the coolest thing about this comic was in #12.  There, he got frozen and ice and revived in the present-day Marvel universe.

Just like Captain America!

Sadly, the book never got to great–but it did consistently exceed my (low) expectations. Rather than meet 616 heroes, Frankenstein fights a robot-man for several issues and just has kind of random adventures. It ended on a cliffhanger…

…A victim of cancellation.
