DAREDEVIL #179 (1982)

The cover seems to promise the death of Daredevil.

But it’s really a Ben Urich story. Actually, it’s Ben FOLLOWING a story that gets him too close to the truth. His source is assassinated in a movie theater, but he doesn’t see who does it.

He does hear her voice, though.

Throughout, Urich doggedly continues to pursue the truth. Daredevil tries to protect him.

Miller does this again and again with Matt. He’s so blinded (pun intended) by his emotions and feelings around Elektra that she is able to trick him, again and again.

Elektra, in the end, seems to kill him in an extraordinary page-long scene…

DAREDEVIL #179

Of course, he’s not dead. Neither of them are.

Miller would do this from time to time–switch the point of view, and tell a story from the reference point of a smaller character. His best version of this narrative style is the “Guts” story coming in Daredevil #185.

This is a chapter in Elektra story that is one of the best Frank Miller stories of all time and the second best Daredevil story of all time (full list here).
