Hulk versus Thor! I’m pretty sure we have never seen these two really throw down before. Lots of Thing vs. Hulk fights…What took so long?
Not much of a story here, but you don’t need one: Hulk fights Thor, Thor changes to Don, they go on their merry ways.
But Thor is distracted by humans needing help, so we don’t get a full, all-out brawl. I would have liked that.
After getting punched, Thor drops his hammer and we get the answer to the question…Can Hulk lift Mjolnir?
Nope.
Very well done sequence, Sal.
Even though the persona of Dr. Don Blake was a handicap for Thor, as he was created to be by his father ( and Stan Lee ) in order to provide the Thunder God with some badly-needed humility, I always believed, and still do, that the advantages and benefits of the Dr. Blake persona outweighed the drawbacks. Dr. Blake’s persona provides Thor with a voice of reason which comes in very handy at times, as well as the humility which prevents Thor from getting too big for his mighty britches, as was the whole idea in the first place. Dr. Blake grounds Thor in the exact same precise manner that Clark Kent grounds Superman, and Billy Batson grounds Captain Marvel. I have a very hard time imagining any of these gods being able to serve Humanity in the long run without their mortal personas to moderate their personalities, which literally prevents them from degenerating into arrogant, all-powerful tyrants who would otherwise undoubtedly get ideas about world domination ( as happened in the late Mark Gruenwald’s awesome mid-Eighties “Squadron Supreme” maxiseries ) and likewise nasty ideas on how to deal with women. Then there is the drama-factor of having Thor occasionally drop/lose the hammer, resulting in Don Blake having to cope with a combat situation, which always provides a great dramatic crisis. Not so much since ‘Thor’#337-338, when the odious Walt Simonson took Dr. Blake out of the equation. Boo Simonson, and boo Marvel for greenlighting the unfortunate decision to make this happen. Fortunately, the ‘Thor’ writership restored Dr. Blake, in an altered state, to the storyline back in 2008. It’s not quite the same humbling situation as before, but it’s preferable to no Dr. Blake at all. Just my take.
