Sensational She-Hulk #31-33 (1991): 1st Spragg in 616 continuity

John Byrne returns to the ongoing awfulness he created.  Well, to be fair, it wasn’t awful when he was doing it.

With his return, the splash page seems to indicate that the last 20 or so issues were just a bad dream. (But we all had to live through them…)

And right away, we’re back where we left off: Lots of 4th-wall breaking, conversations between the creator and the star of the book, etc.  And a very simple story: She-Hulk goes on vacation and meets a very, very old Marvel character: Spragg the Living Hill, from the pre-Marvel Universe, Jack Kirby days of Tales of Suspense.

He has a run-in with Mole Man, and Shulkie is caught in the middle.

No, she doesn’t actually marry Mole Man.

But she does dress for the occassion. (Note John Byrne taking a shot at Jim Lee.)

There’s also a preview to the next story:

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s supposed to be The Simpsons who are about to be eaten by zombies.

Good stuff.  Almost washes away the disaster that came when Byrne left this comic.

Almost.
